CLt20 Perth Scorchers lament end of Champions League

The Perth Scorchers are the first team to lament today’s decision to discontinue the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) tournament.

The Scorchers were scheduled to compete in the 2015 event to be hosted by India in September and October, but will now have time on their hands after the Governing Council of the CLT20 unanimously decided that a lack of public interest in the tournament meant it should be abandoned.

The Scorchers competed in the past four CLT20 tournaments, having earned qualification by finishing within the top two of the KFC T20 Big Bash League in each instance.

“The Perth Scorchers understand the commercial realities that face a tournament such as the Champions League Twenty20 and respect the decision to discontinue the event,” said Perth Scorchers CEO Christina Matthews. “However, we are also disappointed to lose such an opportunity as the Champions League, which provided our players an arena to test themselves against some of the best players in the world and that experience has been invaluable.

“We are confident that the Scorchers operate one of the most professional and extensive programs in the country and this decision will not affect the team’s preparation in targeting a third-consecutive KFC Big Bash League championship.

“As a club, we will work through any administration issues with the appropriate tournament representatives and look forward to continuing our build towards BBL|05.”
