It was not Dilshan that wanted my removal as Sri Lanka coach, says Geoff Marsh

Sri Lanka’s former coach, Australian Geoff Marsh, sacked just three months into a two-year contract in January 2012, believes that someone from outside the team had a hand in his sacking.

Marsh was reacting to a recent media report which suggested that Tillakaratne Dilshan, the national captain at the time, had written a letter to the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board to remove Marsh as coach.

Dilshan was said to have joined members of his team in expressing concerns over Marsh. It was stated that Marsh was more interested in watching his son’s play for Australia against South Africa rather than Sri Lanka playing against Pakistan in UAE.

“He (Dilshan) and I got on well but I think there was someone outside the playing group who was on tour that wanted to coach Sri Lanka and he was driving a nail between us,” Geoff Marsh said. “Dilshan used to ask me to his room and have dinner teaching me all the different Sri Lankan foods along with the players.

“I loved my time coaching Sri Lanka and the players were so nice to coach but sadly it stopped,” he added. “I still speak to the players and I am so pleased to see the young players coming on.

“I was very close to Sanga ,Hearth and Mahela,” Marsh continued. “Sri Lanka have done well and I am happy coaching with Justin Langer at the WACA, so everyone is happy.

“Sri Lanka cricket has a good relationship with Australian coaches and Cricket Australia (CA) so let’s hope that continues,” he concluded.
