The Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) is set for a thrilling finale with the New South Wales Lend Lease Breakers vying for their tenth straight title when they meet the Breezeair South Australia Scorpions in the Final at Blacktown International Sports Park on Sunday.
This is only the third time the Scorpions have reached the final of the 50-over competition, having lost the 1997-98 title to NSW and conceding the 2007-08 trophy to the same side after the match was washed out without a ball being bowled.
The third-placed Scorpions overcame their more highly-touted opponents the Konica Minolta Queensland Fire by three wickets in their semi-final in Sydney today. In a low-scoring affair dominated by bowlers, Megan Schutt was the standout with 4-20, while English import Sarah Taylor anchored her side’s run chase with an unbeaten 21*.
The Breakers won through to their 19th consecutive WNCL final with a seven-wicket defeat of the Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit in Sydney today. Having finished fourth at the end of the regular season, the Breakers overcame their arch rivals and minor premiers thanks to an unbeaten 73* from Captain Alex Blackwell and Ellyse Perry’s knock of 61.
