Windward Volcanoes tasted victory for the first time this season in the Professional Cricket League in the Caribbean as they eased past Leeward Hurricanes in Grenada. Devon Smith hit a crucial 145 as the home side earned a huge first innings lead and never looked back.
The Volcanoes had lost the toss on day one but soon seized the initiative, bowling the Hurricanes out for only 109 as spinners Liam Sebastien and Alston Bobb shared nine of the wickets. Off-spinner Sebastien dealt with much of the upper and lower-orders en route to figures of five for 39, while left-arm spinner Bobb accounted for the bulk of the middle and returned figures of four for 31.
Smith then batted for most of the hosts’ reply, compiling his 24th first-class century and earning himself a call-up to the West Indies side for their upcoming series against South Africa in the process. There were further useful contributions from Johnson Charles (40), Sunil Ambris (33) and Romel Currency (50 not out) as Windward Islands declared on 308 for five on day two.
The Hurricanes made a much better first of their second innings as openers Austin Richards and Lyndel Richardson added 67; the latter dominating the partnership prior to being dismissed for 48 off 45 balls.
26 year-old Orlando Peters then took over and hit his maiden century. He received useful support from skipper Devon Thomas (38) and Jacques Taylor (25) before being last man out for 104. Leeward Islands were all out for 334, with Sebastien again taking five wickets to end with match figures of 10 for 89.
The Volcanoes then made mincemeat of their run chase of 136, winning by nine wickets in less than 43 overs as Tyrone Theophile hit an unbeaten 62 and Charles contributed 46 to their unbroken stand of 90.

He worked for CricketWorld.com for almost three years, leading their county and domestic cricket coverage and contributing to a book about the 2012 ICC World Twenty20, before joining the hugely ambitious World Cricket Badger early in 2014.
The first Test that he remembers watching was on Channel 4 - back before the ECB marginalised potential future fans by selling the TV rights to Sky Sports - when England beat Pakistan by an innings and nine runs at Lord’s.
Besides a passion for domestic cricket, he also has an unexplainable interest in all things Zimbabwe cricket!
