PCL: Dwayne Smith stars as Barbados snatch victory

Guyana Jaguars were unable to make it a hat-trick of wins in West Indies’ Professional Cricket League as they squandered a 160-run first innings advantage to lose by just two runs in a thriller to Barbados Pride at the Providence Stadium.

Despite a sterling effort from Barbados’ batsmen in their second innings after they had been asked to follow-on, Guyana were still left needing only 69 to win on day four. However, they were humbled for 66 as Dwayne Smith tore through their line-up en route to figures of five for 17 and the man of the match award.

The Jaguars had dominated the first half of the contest. They responded to being put into bat on day one by making 261 thanks to a crucial career-best 73 from young wicket-keeper Anthony Bramble at number eight.

Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul then turned in a career-best performance of his own, ripping through the Barbados batting line-up – including taking the last four wickets in the space of seven deliveries – to end with eight for 26 from 15.2 overs as they were bowled out for only 101. Permaul then followed this up with four wickets in the Barbados second dig and must rue the fact that his match figures of 12 for 101 came in a losing cause.

The Pride fightback had begun on day three when Ryan Hinds and Shane Dowrich added 95 for the sixth-wicket. Dowrich fell for exactly 50, but Hinds shepherded the tail effectively before being last man out with the score on 228. It was then over to Dwayne Smith to seal an unexpected win.

Daniel first began writing about cricket in 2011, having been a fan of the game ever since his Grandad introduced him to it at the age of 10.

He worked for CricketWorld.com for almost three years, leading their county and domestic cricket coverage and contributing to a book about the 2012 ICC World Twenty20, before joining the hugely ambitious World Cricket Badger early in 2014.

The first Test that he remembers watching was on Channel 4 - back before the ECB marginalised potential future fans by selling the TV rights to Sky Sports - when England beat Pakistan by an innings and nine runs at Lord’s.

Besides a passion for domestic cricket, he also has an unexplainable interest in all things Zimbabwe cricket!
