Cricket Australia (CA) today advised that a two-day tour match will be played between a CA XI side and India at Gliderol Oval, starting on 4 December.
The Indian side played one tour match against a CA XI side in Adelaide on 24-25 November but the second two-day tour match, which was scheduled to take place on 28-29 November, was cancelled following the passing of Phillip Hughes last week. This serves as a tour match for the Indian side ahead of the Commonwealth Bank Test Series, beginning at the Adelaide Oval on 9 December.
The CA XI squad for the tour match is: Ashton Turner (capt, WA), Ryan Carters (NSW), Jake Doran (NSW), Sebastian Gotch (Vic), Evan Gulbis (Tas), Josh Lalor (NSW), Alexander Keath (Vic), David Moody (WA), Jonte Pattison (NSW), Sam Rainbird (Tas), Matthew Short (Vic) and Jordan Silk (Tas).
“This tour match has been scheduled to allow the Indian team to adequately prepare for the First Commonwealth Bank Test in Adelaide,” said CA Executive General Manager of Team Performance, Pat Howard. “We appreciate the understanding and cooperation shown by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who has been nothing but supportive during this tragic time. They have put the welfare of the Australian national and domestic players, as well as the cricket community’s concerns for Phillip Hughes’ family, well ahead of their own preparation.
“We have a responsibility to provide international teams with adequate preparation ahead of international series and we feel that this two-day tour match will prove sufficient.
“Phillip loved playing cricket and he loved representing Australia. Players around the country will eventually return to cricket at their respective levels, and this is what Phillip would have wanted. However we understand that not all players will be ready to return to the game at the same time. Our number one priority at the moment is the welfare of our players and, having spoken to the players, this squad feels that now is the right time for them to return to the field.
“This is another great opportunity for some of our most exciting young cricketers to test themselves against one of the strongest international teams,” added Greg Chappell, CA’s National Talent Manager. “Ashton Turner will again captain the side. He has shown great leadership potential and performed admirably as Captain in the first tour in Adelaide last month.
CA’s Head Coach, National Performance Program Troy Cooley will coach the side, with Shane McDermott acting as Assistant Coach.
