New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder has signed with the Melbourne Renegades for the Big Bash League after receiving permission from the Otago Volts.
“Respect and appreciation to Otago cricket for their flexibility,” said Ryder, who will line up in Australia alongside Aaron Finch, Matthew Wade and Callum Ferguson. “I’m stoked and grateful to be taking part in one of the best T20 competitions in the world. The Renegades have some class players so I’m looking forward to contributing.”
Ryder averages 27.40 at a strike-rate of 145.90 in T20 cricket, but has had a career overshadowed by off-field indiscretions. In February he was dropped from New Zealand’s Test side after he broke a curfew the night before a Test. He was also given a retrospective six-month suspension for failing a routine drug test earlier in 2013
However, the Renegades coach Simon Helmot said they had “a lot of faith” in Ryder, and that their director of cricket Tom Moody had been instrumental in recruiting him.
“He (Tom Moody) had no hesitation in nominating Jesse as a ‘must have’ for the Renegades and we’re delighted to welcome him to the Renegades this summer,” Renegades coach Simon Helmot said. “We have a lot of faith in Jesse and I’m sure he’ll quickly become a favourite with his big hitting in BBL 04.”
Siddle to leave Nottinghamshire
Peter Siddle has been recalled from county cricket in England by Cricket Australia (CA) and will leave Nottinghamshire midway through their title challenge. Siddle’s central contract allows CA to manage his workload and he will make his final Championship appearance against Lancashire (13-16 July). James Franklin has been signed by Nottinghamshire as a replacement.
Newell added that Nottinghamshire will look at their options for a further replacement later in the season.
“Cricket Australia did not go into too many specifics about why they want Peter back but that is their prerogative but they are allowing him to play three more games, for which we are grateful,” said Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s coach. “But we have a long gap between going to Liverpool on July 16 and Northants on August 15, which will give us time to reassess before the last few games of the season and look around at who is available.”
Nathan Coulter-Nile sidelined after surgery
Australia will play their one-day tour of Zimbabwe in August without Nathan Coulter-Nile, who has had surgery on a hamstring injury he picked up during the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is scheduled to return after the tri-series with South Africa and Zimbabwe with Australia facing a busy domestic summer.
