Muttiah Muralitharan has revealed he is open to playing on for at least another two years ahead of his latest Twenty20 outing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
The Sri Lanka off-spin legend, 41-years-old and long since retired from first-class and one-day cricket, is now a T20 specialist.
He most recently played for the Melbourne Renegades in the Australian Big Bash either side of Christmas, and has upcoming contracts in the IPL, which starts in the UAE tomorrow, and at the Caribbean Premier League in a few months‘ time.
Murali told English newspaper the Manchester Evening News: “I am still really enjoying my cricket.
“It has to be Twenty20 because four-day and Test cricket is out of touch for me. The days are too long! But Twenty20, if you are fit enough, you can enjoy it.
“I have got an IPL contract, one at the West Indies Premier League, and I finish with the Big Bash later this year. It depends how well I go in these three tournaments whether I can sign for one more year or not.”
RCB start their IPL campaign against Kevin Pietersen’s Delhi Daredevils at Sharjah on Thursday, the day of Murali’s 42nd birthday. He is 24 wickets away from 200 in all Twenty20 cricket.
