Dale Benkenstein, Durham’s all-time highest runs-scorer, has joined Hampshire as first team coach ahead of their pre season tour of Barbados.
“I’m looking forward to what is going to be a new challenge for me,” Benkenstein said. “It’s a brilliant set up here, I’ve spoken to the players and coaches at the Club and I’m excited about what’s ahead.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time in South-Africa during the winter and it’s made me look forward to coaching here at Hampshire with what is an exciting squad of players and hopefully we can have an excellent season.”
Giles White, the county’s director of cricket, said: “We are delighted to have Dale on board as he comes with a wealth of experience and an excellent reputation as a leader - we are looking forward to his involvement.”
Benkenstein is hugely experienced in domestic cricket with 300 List A and 264 First-Class appearances to his name. Since making his debut for Durham in April 2005, Benkenstein has gone on to score over 9,000 First-Class runs for the Club at an average of 45.9.
He was made Durham captain ahead of the 2006 season before leading the Club to Friends Provident Trophy glory and a maiden LV= County Championship title in consecutive seasons.
More recently, the 39 year old has spent the winter working as Batting Coach for South-African side Sunfoil Dolphins – the Club of Hampshire’s overseas signing, Kyle Abbott.
