Western Australia Country has claimed the 2014 Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships in Canberra today. In tightly contested mix of one-day, two-day and T20 matches, WA topped the table at the conclusion of the week-long Championships, less than a point ahead of runner-up New South Wales Country.
The Hon. Kevin Andrews MP, Minister for Social Services and Acting Minister for Sport presented the Championship shield to the victorious WA side on field at Manuka Oval during the innings break of the Prime Minister’s XI match.
Minister Andrews also presented the awards to the Championships’ highest achievers, including the prestigious Australia Country XI.
Andrew Ingleton, Cricket Australia Executive General Manager, Game and Market Development, said the Championships play an integral role in Australian cricket’s talent pathway.
“The Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Championships have been an important part of Australian cricket for the past 30 years,” Mr Ingleton said. “It’s been a highly competitive, high quality week of cricket. It’s clear Australia’s passion for cricket stretches to all regions of the country.
“The Australian Country Cricket Championships will continue to be central to Australian cricket’s dedication to unearthing and celebrating our finest cricketers, no matter where they hail from.”
The Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships showcase the best cricket talent from regional areas around Australia and the East Asia-Pacific.
The tournament was first held in Beenleigh in Queensland in 1984-85 and since then has been held in each state on a rotational basis.
