Moin Ashraf shows cricket’s charitable side with kit sales for Martin House Hospice

Moin Ashraf may be better known as a talented seamer for Yorkshire, but he has also shown a real talent for helping charity and has raised over £700 for a local children’s hospice.

As he works on his fitness with the rest of Yorkshire’s squad not involved overseas, Moin has also been working hard exceeding all expectations in raising funds for Martin House Hospice near Wetherby, which cares for youngsters with serious illness and provides support for their families.

He came up with the idea of selling some old kit when he was having a clear out some weeks ago and has been staggered by the response after announcing it on Twitter.

“I was clearing out my stuff and told my Mum that my kit for the new season would be arriving soon and she suggested at first that I could give my old stuff to charity,” he explained. “It was then the idea clicked that I could use Twitter, use it to my advantage and raise some funds for the less fortunate.”

Moin has put all his 2013 Yorkshire kit up for sale alongside several items of memorabilia from Yorkshire’s 2012 Champions League campaign and is now hoping to reach four figures with the remaining items over the next few days.

“Here at Yorkshire we have a really big fan-base, so I thought I could get it out there and try and raise as much money as I could,” he said. “The initial benchmark I was aiming for was £400-500 but I’ve exceeded that and almost doubled it.

“I’ve got five or six more shirts left, a Champions League shirt and a few jumpers left so I’m hoping they will go in the next few days and help us reach a target of around £1,500 with voluntary donations as well.”

He chose Martin House as the beneficiary of his generosity after meeting Jane Ferguson, the chief executive of the Hospice, at Yorkshire’s 150th anniversary dinner at the end of last season and was unable to fulfill a request to visit them and cheer up the children.

“Most of us are in a very fortunate position, so I just wanted to give something back,” he added.
