Jon-Jon Smuts turns the screws on the Titans

Jon-Jon Smuts contributed with both bat and ball as the Warriors put The Titans in a tight spot on day two of their Sunfoil Series clash at Axxess St George’s on Friday.

Smuts hit an unbeaten 50 from just 53 balls as the Warriors boosted their first-innings total to 502 for five declared, then grabbed two middle-order wickets as the Titans were reduced to 147 for six in reply.

Although Albie Morkel (15 not out) and Roelof van der Merwe (18 not out) reduced the damage by taking the Titans to stumps on 180 for six, the visitors remain behind the eight-ball as they still trail by 322 runs.

The second day began brightly for the Titans as David Wiese trapped centurion Colin Ackermann lbw in the first over of the day, but they found the other overnight batsman, Ashwell Prince, rather harder to dislodge.

Prince moved his score from eight not out overnight to 78 from 91 deliveries, and shared in a 107-run stand with Smuts that set up an imposing Warriors total.

Nevertheless the hosts needed a few early strikes to unsettle the Titans line-up, and they achieved that as Wayne Parnell removed Francois le Clus and Henry Davids (35), and Aya Gqamane bowled Jacques Rudolph.

When Smuts accounted for Wiese (52) and Mangaliso Mosehle (30) the Titans found themselves in trouble, which was only partly alleviated by the unbroken stand between Morkel and Van der Merwe.

Parnell ended the day with figures of 2 for 36 in 14 overs, while Smuts had 2 for 19 from 10 overs.
