Temba Bavuma’s elusive search for 2013/14 Sunfoil ton continues

Johan van der Wath and Quinton Friend took three wickets apiece as the Knights became the first team to tame the Highveld Lions batting line-up in the Sunfoil Series this season. However, two early strikes by Hardus Viljoen kept the home side in check at the Diamond Oval.

Cricket-ball-206s64qThe Lions had racked up large totals in their first two matches of the campaign, but found the going rather more difficult against an accurate Knights attack on a testing pitch as they were bowled out for 204, with Friend the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 22 from 21 overs.

However, Viljoen struck in his first and second overs to reduce the Knights to eight for two in reply, before the home side recovered to go to stumps on 56 for two, trailing by 148 runs.

Friend picked up the big wicket of Stephen Cook in the fourth over of the day after the Lions had won the toss and elected to bat, before Van der Wath grabbed the next two wickets to keep the tourists on the back foot.

Seven Lions batsmen fell in single figures as Temba Bavuma was left to fight the battle on his own, with Zander de Bruyn’s 23 the second highest score.

Bavuma has now scored 297 runs this season, but his search for a century goes on after he was the last man out - run out for 96 whilst attempting a single.

Viljoen’s double-strike removed Reeza Hendricks and Dean Elgar at the start of the Knights reply, but Rilee Rossouw (35 not out) stabilised the innings with Rudi Second (16 not out) to keep the Knights on top.
