Captain Davy Jacobs is hoping that he doesn’t lose a couple of pieces of an increasingly snug-fitting jigsaw puzzle when the Warriors face an on-song Highveld Lions side in Thursday’s Sunfoil Series clash at Senwes Park.
Although they were unable to make it count, the Warriors had the upper hand at various points of their draw against the Chevrolet Knights in the first round of fixtures, and Jacobs saw enough good signs to suggest that they are closer to finding the ideal make-up of the team.
“One of the areas we were looking at was the opening combination, because I opened with Michael Price last year and it worked well,” said Jacobs.
“I couldn’t keep then but now that I’ve got the gloves again I’m down the order so we were looking for an opener. We opted for David White who’s a youngster and he had a good game so we’re very happy with that.
“I like the balance of our team. (Simon) Harmer is scoring runs so we can use him at seven and not eight. But we’ll have to look at our team because Ashwell (Prince) might not be available and I’m not sure about Basheer Walters. The medical team are going to have to give their assessment.”
While Prince may miss the game because of a family bereavement, Walters will need to prove his fitness after picking up a niggle.
The Lions came away from their first game against The Unlimited Titans with a resounding win and 19.16 points, and will have Alviro Petersen back at the helm after the Proteas batsman overcame a back injury.
Stephen Cook oversaw last weekend’s game, and was pleased with the way that everyone chipped in.
“The bowlers did really well as a unit,” said Cook. “Although you might look at it and say that Chris Morris and Hardus Viljoen broke the back, Pumi Matshikwe and Eddie Leie took some vital wickets and broke a couple of key partnerships, so the bowling unit as a whole did really nicely.
“There were also some good contributions from the batsmen - Temba Bavuma got an 80 and a 40, and Dominic Hendricks got a good 60 in the second innings under tough conditions - so probably the biggest success was that it was a team effort.”
