The Chevrolet Warriors, after an unbeaten start to the Momentum One-Day Cup, can’t be accused of being a one-man team, but Davy Jacobs’ side may get the opportunity to shed that tag when they take on the Sunfoil Dolphins at Axxess St George’s on Wednesday.
A six-for and a century from Wayne Parnell in the opening two games of the season ensured back-to-back victories for the Warriors before Friday’s washout against the Cape Cobras, but now they may have to do without their key player.
With the Proteas suffering from a couple of niggles ahead of the second Test against Pakistan in Dubai on Wednesday, Parnell was put on standby for 12th man duty on Tuesday, leaving Jacobs uncertain of the all-rounder’s availability.
“He was never really going to play this game, and then last week we heard that he could play the fourth game,” said Jacobs. “So we never really banked on him playing until last week, but now I think he might be gone.
“It would be a massive loss, because when you replace him you have to replace a batter and a bowler.”
Should Parnell be unavailable then the Warriors would be an opening batsman short, since Vuyisa Makhaphela remains a long-term injury concern. Jacobs said he may shift up to the top of the order himself, but the team were still exploring their options.
Along with the Warriors, the Dolphins are the other unbeaten side in the competition but will be without 20-year-old paceman Calvin Savage.
“Tomorrow’s a big game for both sides, but it’s also a big week,” said Dolphins coach Lance Klusener. “We’ve got three games this week and, if we can have a good string of games, it will put us in an excellent position going forward.”
