A former South African first-class cricketer has died having been struck on the head during a club game on Sunday. Darryn Randall was hit having attempted to play a pull shot, but medical staff at Alice Hospital were unable to revive him.
Randall, 32-years-old, was playing in a Border Cricket Board Premier League match between Old Selbornians and Fort Hare University. ESPN Cricinfo have reported that he was wearing a helmet.
He made four first-class and as many List A appearances as a wicketkeeper-batsman for Border between October, 2009 and January, 2010. He is survived by his mother and fiancee.
“This is a very sad day, indeed,” said Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat. “I would like to convey CSA’s deepest condolences on behalf of the South African cricketing family, not just to his family and friends but also to all the players, umpires, clubs and everybody else who was present at this match. CSA will be offering counselling to all those involved.”
