The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) continues to flex its muscles in the protracted rumblings with Cricket South Africa (CSA), so much so that CSA is considering forcing its CEO, Haroon Lorgat, on long leave to smooth future negotiations over December’s tour by India .
The series had previously been reduced after CSA announced the tour dates without what the BCCI considered proper consultation. It now appears that personality issues and bad blood with Lorgat dating back years is now driving the Indian cricket agenda rather than what is the best option for cricket now.
India are box office wherever they go and CSA recognise any further hiccups could prove financially disastrous.
ESPNCricinfo has reported that when the BCCI and CSA met on 12 October a “fruitful” dialogue saw a two Test series and three One-Day Internationals agreed for December on the condition that “CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat is not involved in India affairs in future”.
“It is also understood that CSA has also informed the BCCI bosses that they would be working out a plan before the end of the tour to ensure Lorgat is not involved in future dealings with the BCCI,” the report added.
The BCCI were upset when CSA hired Lorgat. In his previous role as CEO of the International Cricket Council, Lorgat locked horns with Indian cricket more than once.
If Lorgat is forced to disappear from negotations with the BCCI, the current superpower of international cricket, his position and future with CSA is surely untenable. It is an embarrassing situation too for CSA, who only months after appointing the right man for the job are sidelining him.
