The Knights’ Momentum One-Day Cup season went from bad to worse on Wednesday as they were bowled out for 90 by The Titans on their way to an eight-wicket defeat.
Although the pitch at Sahara Willowmoore Park was a difficult one, showing a fair degree of inconsistent bounce, there was truth in the old adage that both sides had to bat on it and the Titans had far fewer problems.
They romped to victory inside 23 overs to secure the bonus point, losing the wickets of Henry Davids and Heino Kuhn but also seeing Jacques Rudolph retire hurt after he was hit on the hand by Tumi Masekela.
The Knights’ innings lasted just 27.2 overs after they were inserted by Titans skipper Davids, as Marchant de Lange ran through the top order on his way to figures of 4 for 29.
De Lange accounted for Reeza Hendricks and Rilee Rossouw as the Knights fell to 10 for three inside four overs, and also claimed the wickets of Pite van Biljon and Nicky Boje, who were joint top scorers in the innings with 16.
Ethy Mbhalati, David Wiese and Rowan Richards also took a couple of wickets apiece, with Richards’ dismissal of Ryan McLaren an indication of the difficult pitch as he gloved a leaping delivery to second slip.
Although Davids fell early in the reply when he was trapped lbw by a McLaren delivery that kept low, Rudolph and Kuhn navigated the Titans towards victory with a 79-run stand for the second wicket.
Kuhn was bowled by Masekela for 43 with just seven runs required and Rudolph retired hurt after the next delivery, but De Lange thumped his first delivery for an enormous six before a no-ball allowed them to finish things off.
