Ramesh Powars from Mumbai to Rajasthan

Ramesh Powar, the 35-year-old off-spinner is to leave his home town of Mumbai to play for Rajasthan in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. He has signed a two-year deal.

The all-rounder has been enticed to Rajasthan by former teammate Hrishikesh Kanitkar.

“I and Hrishi have been good friends and have played together for departmental teams, Mumbai and West Zone teams for years,” Powar told the Times of India. “We have good understanding and he offered me play for Rajasthan.”

Second Test - Australia v Pakistan: Day 4“I was playing for Mumbai for 13-14 years and it was becoming a routine thing so I shifted to Rajasthan.

“Rajasthan have been Ranji champion for two consecutive years which was no mean feat,” he said.

Known as a stocky figure he has worked hard to get fit ahead of the new season.

“It was a challenge for me to lose weight. I have worked hard because I feel playing for Rajasthan ushers in a new innings for me,” he continued. “I want to contribute in all departments and that is why I wanted to be in best shape.”

“I still hope to play for country. A couple of good performance can turn the things your way. You never know. More over there is dearth of quality spinners in country,” he concluded.

Powar played two Tests and 35 One-Day Internationals for India between 2004 and 2007.
