High scoring Shikhar Dhawan to play for Surrey

Team India’s fast-scoring batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been invited to play for Surrey. The invitation has come from Alistair Brown, whose List A record of 268 runs in an inning for Surrey in 2002, was under threat when Dhawan made mincemeat of South Africa A with 248 on Monday.

Speaking exclusively from the Oval, where he is a 2nd XI coach, Ali Brown said, “I’ve no doubt Shikhar will have opportunity in the future to target all sorts of records and I look forward to watching those innings. I’m also looking forward to BCCI releasing Shikhar to play for Surrey in next year’s 20/20″.

“Having seen the scorecard I feel quite fortunate that my record is still in tact!”, he added.

“I didn’t see the game in Pretoria as I was currently 2nd XI coach at Surrey CCC and we had a game although I was made aware of it through out the day via twitter and Indian journalists!”

“If you have a DVD of it please send it to the Oval”, he requested.

“Having seen what Shikhar was capable of last year during India’s World Cup win this really doesn’t come as a surprise and he is one of a clutch of young Indian batsmen following in the footsteps of Tendulkar, Sehwag, Dhoni et al”.

“It’s good to see the likes of Dhawan and Rahane ,who impressed me at Old Trafford last year, playing with such freedom and class and just shows the depth of talent that India possesses for the coming years. I feel the success of the IPL has gone a long way to producing this influx of talent that India is now seeing on the World stage”, he added.

“As for my 268, I think you have days in your career when you see the ball like a football and on this day in particular I’d never hit it cleaner.

“You almost go into auto pilot, especially when you’ve gone past 100 and every ball you look for a boundary as the fear of getting out has gone. I certainly didn’t realise the enormity of what I had done until a few days later and the expectation that came with that”, he said about his innings.

“Records are there to be broken and I firmly believe that the 203 I scored against Hampshire in 1997 in 40 overs will be broken at some point. 268 does take it to another level but anything is possible if you only believe it”.

“Some people might look back and say ‘what if’ for Shikhar’s knock today. I know what that feels like having scored 176 (after 33 overs against Gloucestershire in our record breaking team score of 496 in 2007) but you don’t look to records you look at the boundary option for the next ball and no further”.

“Good luck to India ‘A’ in the final and send my best regards to ‘Sharky'”, he signed off.
