“It’s a great news. Not only Parvez, but all our other boys will benefit, if he (Azharuddin) accepts the job”, Ghulam Rasool Zargar says from his residence.

Parvez, the 25-year-old right handed middle-order batsman and off-break bowler is the first player from Jammu Kashmir to be selected in an Indian team to play an international side.

“At present there is no coach for our team till Bishan Bedi was recruited last year”, the father added.

“I don’t think time constraints should be a problem for Azharuddin”, he added. “If India’s other cricketer-turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu can spare all his time for TV shows, why can’t Azhar for coaching.”

President’s radar

Farooq Abdullah, the president of the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) is believed to have offered the position to Team India’s 50-year-old former captain.

“Azharuddin was in our president’s radar from the day when his (Azhar) son was killed in the bike accident”, he suggested. “The president didn’t wish to disturb him at that point of time but now everything seems to be settled, it is time to approach him.”

Two years ago, Azhar’s teen-aged son Ayazzudin died of injuries from bike accident.

“Before becoming a Member of Parliament (MP), Azhar used to devote much of his time with his other son Abbas (as Asad is known) for coaching”, John Manoj, the coach in Hyderabad, says.

Ex-wife optimistic for their son

“I want my son to be coached by Azhar. He can turn out to be his best coach”, Naureen, Azhar’s first wife, whom he divorced in 1996, had said exclusively to this reporter a few months ago from Hyderabad.
