Sri Lanka’s right-arm medium fast bowler Dhammika Prasad will be given steroid injections on the shoulder injury that has forced him from from the tour of England.
Our sources in Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have told us that the 32-year-old Prasad has a rotator cuff injury which has forced him to return home from the tour of England. The rotator is a group of tendons and muscles in the shoulder, connecting the upper arm (humerus) to the shoulder blade (scapula). The rotator cuff tendons provide stability to the shoulder; the muscles allow the shoulder to rotate.
“He is certainly out of the current tour,” the source confirmed. “He has also been advised to take corticosteroid injection. Initially only one injection will be given, and the progress of his injury will be studied before deciding whether to advise him to take more. He could have taken this injection in England but was once he was ruled out for the Test series, the decision, in consultation with the physio, was taken to send him home.”
SLC are yet to name a replacement and scans and the physio’s correspondence will be forwarded to the medical panel. Dr. Harindu Wijesinghe, one of the members of the medical panel, when contacted at Nawaloka Hospital, refused to divulge the details of Prasad’s injury and any further lines of treatment.
Corticosteroids are also available in tablet forms but, if taken orally, under the WADA code are banned. The treatment is permissible if injected into the body.
