The 32-year-old slow- left-arm spinner was tested at the University of Pretoria’s High Performance Centre after being reported for a suspect action during last week’s one-day match between Highveld Lions and the Warriors. The assessment concluded that all variations of his deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted.
Cricket South Africa will not play Phangiso in the first two matches of the KFC T20 International series against Australia starting on Friday, but he will remain with the Proteas’ squad to work on his action with spin-bowling coach, Claude Henderson, and CSA High Performance Manager, Vinnie Barnes.
He will be retested on Monday to decide his short-term future and whether he will travel to India with the Proteas squad for the ICC World T20.
“The timing of this issue for Aaron and for our World T20 squad is clearly inopportune but we need to deal with it,” said CSA Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat. “We will work hard to remedy Aaron’s action and have him retested as soon as practically possible.
“We are fortunate to have an ICC accredited Laboratory in South Africa and this will certainly make a quick turnaround possible.”
