South African middle-order batsman David Miller has been announced as captain of Kings XI Punjab for the forthcoming Indian Premier League season.
“I am honoured to lead the Kings XI Punjab squad this year,” said Miller, who has played for the Punjab franchise since the fourth edition of the IPL in 2011. “I would like to thank the franchise, promoters, management and all the team members for the confidence they have in me.
“Kings XI have assembled an exciting squad with a good mixture of youth and experience and I am really looking forward to the opportunity that lies ahead.”
Miller replaces Australian George Bailey as skipper. Bailey was surprisingly was not purchased in the recent IPL auction.
Kings XI Punjab struggled last season with Miller the only batsman to register over 300 runs. He hit 357 at 32.45, with a strike rate of 134.21. Kings XI however finished at the foot of the IPL table.
Miller and Australians Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Johnson are Kings XI’s overseas contingent.
“I have watched David grow as a player. He has displayed outstanding batting abilities and a cool temperament in many high-pressure situations,: commented Kings XI coach Sanjay Bangar. “I am confident in his potential to lead the boys this season.”
