#MatadorCup: Hastings four takes Bushrangers home against New South Wales

The Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers beat New South Wales by 21 runs in the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup match at North Sydney Oval after inspired spells from John Hastings and Scott Boland.

Half-centuries from Rob Quiney and Matthew Wade got Victoria to 244 before Hastings took 4-30 to change the momentum of the game with Victoria’s go-to death bowler Boland finishing the job as NSW were bowled out for 223, having been 2-159.

With Steve Smith rested, Moises Henriques took over the NSW captaincy and elected to bowl after winning the toss and that decision paid immediate dividends with Aaron Finch bowled in the third over by Mitch Starc for two.

After a sedate start, Cameron White upped the scoring rate with four boundaries in two overs before being bowled around his legs by Sean Abbott for 27. Quiney continued to play aggressively with his second six despite losing Glenn Maxwell at the other end for five. Quiney, who was called up in to the side for Marcus Stoinis, reached his fifty in 44 deliveries and put on 45 runs with Peter Handscomb before he was caught for 20 (25).

Dan Christian was dismissed early for one to leave the Bushrangers 5-122 in the 24th over. Quiney’s impressive innings came to an end on 79 (75) when he was stumped off the bowling of Stephen O’Keefe.

Victoria was unable to get a meaningful partnership going with Hastings the next man out for 16 as the Bushrangers crashed to 7-165 with 15 overs remaining.

Wade and James Pattinson became the first pair to post a 50-run stand with the Victorian skipper having the better of the battle with Starc. Wade lapped Starc over fine leg for six to bring up his half-century before Starc had Pattinson bowled for 18. Starc also cleaned up the tail removing Jon Holland and Boland to leave Wade unbeaten on 63. Hastings picked up the dangerous Nic Maddinson in the fourth over for 20.

Ed Cowan and Shane Watson began to get on top of the Victorian attack until Pattinson trapped the former in front for 39.

Watson reached his half-century from 68 deliveries as NSW cruised to 2-137 after 28 overs. The partnership between Watson and Henriques notched 74 before Hastings returned to get Henriques LBW for 37.

The momentum swung Victoria’s way as Christian got Watson with the fourth LBW decision of the innings then Hastings grabbed two more LBWs in an over as the home side lost 4-13. The pressure continued to build on the Blues as the required run rate climbed over a run a ball.

A double-wicket maiden from Boland in the fourth last over triggered the final collapse with the Blues losing 4-4 to go down by 21 runs.

Victoria plays Tasmania on Tuesday at North Sydney Oval with a win required to make the elimination final.
