#ZIMvNZ: Williamson calls for Kiwi response after Zimbabwe ODI defeat

Kane Williamson wants to see his New Zealand side bounce back strongly after a defeat in their opening ODI in the three-match series in Zimbabwe.Zimbabwe cruised to a seven-wicket win in Harare despite chasing 304 to win. Craig Ervine’s unbeaten 130 from 108 balls saw them home with six balls to spare. Opener Hamilton Masakadza had got Zimbabwe off to the required start with 84 from 99 balls and shared in a second wicket stand worth 120 with Ervine.

Williamson, in charge of the side while Brendon McCullum is rested, later admitted that the Kiwis had been outplayed by Zimbabwe in all departments.

“We’ll look at little areas with the ball we can improve on,” Williamson told www.blackcaps.co.nz. “It certainly wasn’t a train wreck, but we’ll look for improvement in all areas. I thought 300 was enough, but Zimbabwe outplayed us in all areas today and full credit to them.”

The 24-year-old made 97 in New Zealand’s 303 for four, while Ross Taylor scored 112, his 15th ODI ton. The pair notched their 10th century stand and they have now scored 2193 runs in 38 innings at an average of 60.91 together.

The second ODI will also be played in Harare on Tuesday.
