Joe Burns wants Australia place back after impressive A levels

Joe Burns has been impressing for Australia A at just the right time and wants his Test place back.

As the senior side were bowled out for a mere 60 at Trent Bridge by England, a number of Australians on another continent have been staking their claim for a senior place.

The postmortem into Australia’s Ashes failings is gathering pace and there are bound to be calls for heads to roll and changes demanded. Joe Burns, Usman Khawaja and Cameron Bancroft have been the leading lights with bat in for Australia A in recent weeks.

Burns shared a 239-run opening stand with fellow centurion Usman Khawaha on Friday as India A were soundly beaten by 119-runs.

Burns is in tremendous form, blasting 14 sixes in his 131-ball 154 in that game, an innings followed an unbeaten 63 in the opening match of the tri-series competition against South Africa A.

He played a couple of Tests for Australia against India at the turn of the year, making 58 and 66 in his last appearance in Sydney in January.

“You want to be playing in every game of cricket you can, including playing for your country,” he said. “It’s a great feeling and you want to be playing, but it’s a fantastic side as well and there was always going to be guys coming back.

“I knew at the end of the summer that there were other guys making runs and sometimes selections don’t go your way, but you cant get too down about it,” he continued. “You have to focus again quickly and make sure you are making runs in every single game that you play in, regardless of the format or where you are playing.

“It’s been a good challenge, but I’ve enjoyed the last few months and feel like i’m in some good form now and hopefully I can carry that for as long as possible and gets some more runs on the board.

“Whatever my role is, in any team I play in, I try and adapt my game and get the most out of every game that I can.”
