Somerset’s Craig Overton has successful ankle operation

Somerset’s 20-year-old all-rounder Craig Overton has had successful surgery on his ankle this week in a bid to ensure that he will be pain free for the 2015 season.

Overton is now hopeful that this will put an end to the problem and is keen to get back in to action as soon as he can.

“No one likes to be injured but the operation went well and hopefully it will all be sorted out in time for the summer,” Overton said. “I think I’ll be out for around 8 to 10 weeks so if it all goes to plan I could be ready for the first game of the season and if not then definitely the second match.”

Overton suffered a recurrence of a long standing ankle problem whilst on duty with the England Lions recently and the decision was made for him to go under the knife.

“We always try to manage these things without an operation for as long as we can but it was evident in Craig’s case that he needed surgery,” Somerset Physiotherapist Jamie Thorpe explains. “They’ve removed a piece of bone that was sitting at the back of his ankle which was pinching when his foot was pointed.

“We are confident this will settle everything down in time for the season and allow him to bowl pain free.”

Whilst the operation appears to have been a success, Thorpe outlines that the Club won’t be rushing Craig back in to action.

“Although it is a fairly routine operation, it still puts a lot of stress on the ankle where the surgeon has to go in. We need to protect the area for a couple of weeks and then his ankle will have to get used to accepting load again. Daz (Darren Veness, Somerset CCC Strength & Conditioning Coach) will also have to work his magic on him to get him strong again. So as you can see, it’s not just about the injury itself, it’s a combination of things that need to be addressed.”
