Morne Van Wyk became the third South African to score a T20 International century to set up the Ticketpro Proteas for a 69-run victory over the West Indies in the third KFC T20 International at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Wednesday.
Van Wyk’s unbeaten innings of 114 off 70 balls (9 fours and 7 sixes) enabled the Proteas to post a total of 195/3 after West Indies had won the toss which they then managed to defend quite comfortably.
Van Wyk and Reeza Hendricks shared an opening stand of 111 in 12.4 overs to establish the platform and then David Wiese became the second South African after Ryan McLaren (also against the West Indies) to take five wickets in an innings to complete the victory.
Even without Chris Gayle, the West Indies made a strong reply to the South African total, scoring 57 in the power play overs compared to South Africa’s 62 but then Wiese and Aaron Phangiso took three wickets in four overs between them to stop the West Indies’ momentum.
They never regained control as Wiese finished with 5/23 and Phangiso with 1/23.
Phangiso produced one of the deliveries of the day with late drift to knock over Dwayne Smith’s leg stump which suggests that he may have a role to play in the longest format of the game.
In the bigger picture of the approaching World Cup JP Duminy made a good return for the Proteas. He did not get much opportunity with the bat but took a couple of catches in the deep and looked ready for a return to international action.
Van Wyk was named Man of the Match and Gayle Man of the Series.
