BBL|04: Langer pleased that Carberry has found Scorching form

Perth Scorchers coach Justin Langer was delighted with Man of the Match Michael Carberry’s performance, which he thinks has justified his signing.

The Scorchers defeated the Brisbane Heat by eight wickets on Thursday night, with Carberry blasting 77no off 37 balls to move to a 4-2 record and firm up their grip on second spot.

“I remember Craig Simmons last year, I was the biggest chump in the world bringing him back and he’s done alright for himself. He helped us win the BBL last year and the Matador Cup this year,” Langer stated on the criticism of Carberry’s initial signing. “We don’t just bring in people willy nilly. We’re selective of who we bring in. We know they’re good people and good players. Michael Carberry is one of those and I thought it was just a matter of time before he did well for us.”

Meanwhile Carberry is happy to repay Langer’s faith: “It was nice to contribute. I felt an innings like that was on the horizon,” he said. “I knew I had to keep chipping away at training which Justin (Langer) and the guys have been fantastic in that regard. (They’e shown) A lot of patience and it’s nice to be able to re-pay them.”

And for the Scorchers’ finals hopes?

It’s very close. There’s no doubt about that,” he said. “The teams are a lot more evenly matched this year. Whether it’s due to injuries or Australian selections, I’m not sure.

“All squads seem very evenly matched and the points indicate that.

“We know we need to win at least another one to get into the finals and hopefully a home semi-final.”
