Cricket Australia have announced that Chris Rogers will replace Mike Hussey as Captain of the Prime Minister’s XI that will play England at Manuka Oval on 14 January.
Hussey has been withdrawn from the match due to a calf injury he sustained while playing for the Sydney Thunder in the KFC T20 Big Bash League (BBL) on Friday night.
Rogers played a key role in the recent Commonwealth Bank Test Series against India, in which he contributed six consecutive half-centuries.
Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Tony Abbott MP, said: “It is disappointing that Mike Hussey won’t be available to take his place as Captain on Wednesday but I wish him a speedy recovery from his injury.
“I am pleased that Chris Rogers has accepted the invitation to take Mike’s place as Captain. Chris has a wealth of international and domestic experience and after a successful Test series he is well placed to lead the team.”
Speaking about his appointment as Captain Rogers said: “It’s a great honour for me to be selected as Captain of the Prime Minister’s XI to take on England. This is an important fixture on the Australian cricketing calendar and is steeped in tradition. I’m looking forward to following in the footsteps of Ricky Ponting, Brett Lee and others in leading this PM’s XI under lights at Manuka Oval.
PM’s XI players Pat Cummins and Glenn Maxwell were this morning named in Australia’s team for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
The news of Rogers’ appointment will disappoint Kevin Pietersen and his supporters. The Englishman said yesterday he would relish the chance to take on his former England team-mates.
