#SAvWI: Marlon Samuels and Devon Smith go big in South Africa

West Indies piled on the runs on the second day of their three-day tour match against a South Africa Invitational XI (SA XI) as Marlon Samuels (203 retired out) and Devon Smith (174 retired out) put on a mammoth 360-run third-wicket partnership, and accounted for the majority of their team’s first innings score of 508 all out. The pair smashed 62 boundaries during their 59-over partnership, and scored at better than a run-a-ball for most of their stand.

The SA XI bowlers fought back to take the last six wickets for 113 runs, with veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul falling for a second-ball duck. The only other batsman to pass the 20-run mark was captain, Dinesh Ramdin, who was the last man standing on 48.

Tabraiz Shamsi (3/106) was the top wicket-taker, with Aviwe Mgijima (2/49) and Rory Kleinveldt (2/69) chipping in with wickets. Beuran Hendricks dislocated a finger while attempting a caught-and-bowled chance and was unable to finish an over, but returned to the field after receiving treatment.

Bad light stopped play an hour before the scheduled close with SA XI on 17/0 in their second innings, still trailing by 366 runs. Play will resume at 10h10 on Friday with 95 overs scheduled for the final day.
