Australia benefit from having World Cup places on offer, says Aaron Finch

Australia’s 2-1 lead over South Africa in the current One-Day International series is down to fierce competition for places according to Aaron Finch.Finch made his 5th ODI century century as Australia thrashed the visitors by a 73-run margin in the third ODI in Canberra. And with Michael Clarke and Mitchell Johnson currently sidelined, their replacements, Steven Smith made 73 and Mitchell Starc took four wickets.

“It’s a real positive when you have guys challenging for spots, because it’s driving you to perform well,” Finch said. “If you don’t perform, you’re sitting on the pine. Nobody is safe in the side except the skipper (George Bailey). When you’ve got that kind of competition in the side, it’s really quality.”

“The guys are still helping each other out,” he added. “There’s none of this `I’m trying to look after my own spot’. It’s about helping the team win games of cricket.”

“We had a great first ODI, then a very poor one. Then we’ve had a great one again,” Finch continued, as he looked ahead to the fourth ODI in Melbourne on Friday “Consistency is what we’re about and that’s what we’re really striving for, moving into an ODI World Cup in the next couple of months.”.
