Justin Langer says Shield appearance is so important for Western Warriors

The Western Warriors coach Justin Langer today spoke to media at Manuka Oval ahead of the team’s final training session before the Bupa Sheffield Shield final against New South Wales.

Sheffield Shield - Bushrangers v Warriors: Day 1“It’s so important, we love it,” Langer enthused. “Not many guys get the chance to play Test cricket, so when you get a five-day Shield final (it’s great).

“The great goal in all domestic cricket is to win a Sheffield Shield.

“We won the BBL this year but that’s a six-week patch, this is a 47-48 week patch where they get flogged all pre-season, they work hard, we talk about it, have team meetings, reviews to win a Sheffield Shield.

“This is a reward for a long period of time, not just the intense period of BBL.”

15-year wait

“We haven’t been in a Shield final for 15 years so that says something in itself,” continued Langer. “We’ve worked very hard, there hasn’t been a lot of science in what we’ve been doing, we’ve changed the mindset, we’ve toughened up, we’ve earned respect.

“It’s nice to be one step further than we have been before, but we understand it’s nice to be there and we’re in the business of winning and we’ll be looking to win this game.”

“I don’t think he has to prove anything,” said Langer. “He’s played Test cricket, he’s 21-years-old, he’s a brilliant talent and spin bowling often takes time to develop and build confidence in.

“It’ll nice for him to play in this game, it’ll be like another Test match for him.

“I thought he handled himself really well in his Test matches already and he’s the most exciting talents in Australia in my opinion.

“It’s good to see him confident and he can’t wait to play.”
