Knights coast to 10-wicket Sunfoil victory over Highveld Lions

The Knights needed little more than an hour on day three to wrap up their first Sunfoil Series victory of the season as they beat the Highveld Lions by 10 wickets at the Diamond Oval on Saturday.

Corne Dry picked up two of the remaining three wickets in the Lions second innings to grab a five-wicket haul and, although the visitors were able to force the Knights to bat again, Reeza Hendricks and Dean Elgar easily knocked off the 15 runs required for victory.

That gave the Knights a handy 17.24 points from the match, while the Lions earned 6.08.

The Lions had been reduced to 29 for seven on the second evening, and it took a bold 35 from Neil McKenzie to prevent an innings defeat. Hardus Viljoen was caught behind off the bowling of Dry in the fourth full over on Saturday morning and, after Pumelela Matshikwe had been run out in the next over, McKenzie became Dry’s fifth victim as the Lions were bowled out for 72. Dry finished with figures of 5 for 27.

The Knights took just 2.5 overs to knock off the runs needed to give their campaign a well-timed boost.

Rilee Rossouw was named man of the match for his 111 in the Knights’ first innings, which was the only century of a low-scoring game.
