Adam Voges hits maiden double ton in Shield draw

The Western Warriors captain, Adam Voges, has hit a sensational double-century but the Bupa Sheffield Shield match with Queensland at the WACA Ground has ended in a draw. Voges scored his maiden double-ton at Shield level with excellent support from Sam Whiteman (74no) to stave off any threat of an outright defeat, but time ran out on both sides.

Queensland were 2-81 when stumps was called, chasing 301 from 41 overs, after WA had declared prior to the tea break at 5-447.

“We needed a lot more time in the game than what we had, unfortunately it’s petered out to a draw but we were behind in this game for a long time, so we were happy to not lose this game,” Voges said.

The Warriors resumed the final day at 3-182, with an overall lead of 35 runs, and Voges reached his 11th Shield hundred inside the first hour, having commenced the day on 90no.

James Hopes dismissed Shaun Marsh (47) and Mitchell Marsh (27) in the first session but Voges combined with Whiteman for an excellent 162-run sixth-wicket partnership through the middle session which gave WA a 300-run advantage.

Voges offered few chances throughout his innings, and was clearly delighted when he brought up his maiden Shield double-hundred.

“I was really happy with the way I’ve batted in this game, I had a bit of luck, but I was really happy to be able to lead from the front,” Voges said.

Domestic FixturesThe 34-year-old eventually surpassed Ken Meuleman’s 56-year record for the highest score ever made by a WA captain, before declaring with WA at 5-447 and himself on 235no.

Meanwhile, quiet achiever Whiteman brought up his fourth half-century of the Shield season and finished the day 74no in a knock which included 13 fours.

Queensland were set to face 41 overs with a challenging target of 301 to win in the final session, but neither side genuinely was able to push for a result.

Luke Pomersbach, who was awarded the Man of the Match honours, added a quickfire 40 to his first innings score of 159, before departing to Ashton Agar who claimed two wickets. Eventually, the two sides agreed to call an end to the contest.

WA 254 & 5-447 (Voges 235no, Whiteman 74; Hopes 3-73, Feldman 1-82) drew with Queensland 401 & 2-81 (Pomersbach 40; Agar 2-22)
