The Warriors look likely to go through their opening three Sunfoil Series fixtures without a win, but they’ve certainly stood up to everything that’s been thrown at them. Last weekend they were put under huge pressure by the high-scoring Highveld Lions and came through the test, and on Saturday they withstood a similar challenge from the Cape Cobras at Axxess St George’s.
The Warriors began day three on 15 for one in reply to the Cobras’ 526 for four declared facing a long haul towards parity, but by the end of it they had more or less guaranteed that they wouldn’t be beaten by going to stumps on 384 for five.
The man central to their resistance was, unsurprisingly, the gutsy Ashwell Prince. The Cobras found the left-hander immovable on the day as he scored 168 not out against an attack that boasted a bit of depth.
Prince came to the middle when the first wicket of the day fell in the 18th over, and shared in partnerships of 97 with opener David White (63) and 140 with Ryan Bailey (77), before seeing the hosts past the follow-on target.
It was a long day in the field for the Cobras as Prince turned the tables on them, and only Beuran Hendricks and Dane Paterson gained any reward.
While Hendricks added the wicket of Bailey to the one he picked up late on Friday, Paterson dismissed Jon-Jon, Smuts, White and Simon Harmer to claim figures of 3 for 71.
Prince was accompanied to the close of play by Davy Jacobs, who was unbeaten on six as the Warriors still trailed by 142 runs.
