The Titans have seen their Sunfoil Series fixture against the Sunfoil Dolphins brought forward by a day at short notice due to the funeral of Nelson Mandela, but Titans coach Rob Walter has been grateful for the break that his side has enjoyed recently.
Sunday’s ODI between the Proteas and India at Sahara Park Kingsmead meant that the Titans and Dolphins were unable to play last weekend, allowing them extra preparation time for their third four-day game of the season.
“I wasn’t too unhappy to have the time off,” said Walter. “I think it’s worked out nicely just from the point of view of getting the bowlers back into four-day cricket and then allowing a bit of time off from the game.
“We went straight into four-day cricket from the Momentum One-Day Cup so we hadn’t really had time to mentally get away from the game and allow various things to sink in.”
Although the Titans will be without regular captain Henry Davids because of his call-up to the Proteas ODI squad, Walters has a few positive changes for Wednesday’s game.
Albie Morkel will return from a sabbatical to play his first franchise game this season, while Rowan Richards is in the squad that will travel to Durban and Marchant de Lange has a chance of returning from a side strain.
For Dolphins coach Lance Klusener, the challenge has been to keep his side busy during a patch of inclement weather in Durban.
“We’ve been plagued by the weather all-round but I guess that’s the nature of four-day cricket in Durban,” he said. “There’s not that much you can do.
“We’re just trying to get guys some games and do as much practice as we can, but the weather looks dodgy for the next couple of days as well, so we get what we get.”
