Queensland claimed first innings points on day two of the Bupa Sheffield Shield clash against the Western Warriors at the WACA Ground on Saturday. On a day which begun with another rain interruption, the Bulls went past the Warriors’ first innings score of 254 late in the day, before play was halted due to bad light.
Earlier, Mitchell Marsh fell agonisingly short of a second first-class century, dismissed by Luke Feldman for 96 after resuming on 69no. Sam Whiteman also missed out on a breakthrough ton having started the day on 36no, departing for 61 caught behind to Michael Neser in an important first session.
In reply, Luke Pomersbach hit an excellent century for the visitors who are 3-255 at stumps, with the ex-WA batsman unbeaten on 137, alongside nightwatchman Nathan Hauritz (0no). Ashton Agar (1-58) and Michael Hogan (1-56) took the wickets for WA, while John Rogers ran out Usman Khawaja for 64 after a mix-up with Pomersbach.
WA had commenced the day at 5-158, but rain interrupted the first session’s play, although Whiteman was able to push forward and bring up his half-century. However, the Bunbury product lost his wicket for 61 and when Mitchell Marsh was caught in the slips shortly before lunch, Queensland had their two key scalps in the first session.
The Bulls quickly cleaned up the WA tail, despite a cameo from Ashton Agar who made 26 off 28 balls, including three fours and a six, as WA were all out for 254. Feldman finished as Queensland’s best bowler with 4-58, while Ben Cutting and Neser took two wickets each.
In reply, Nathan Reardon and Pomersbach started aggressively, with the WA bowlers struggling to find the right line and length. Reardon was dropped by skipper Voges on 19, but departed shortly after with Mitchell Marsh producing a fine catch off Hogan’s bowling to make it 1-51.
Pomersbach and Khawaja put on a 142-run second-wicket partnership which arrested control of the match and frustrated the WA bowlers. Pomersbach brought up his century with a big six, but only moments later was involved in a mix-up which led to Khawaja’s dismissal.
Chris Lynn combined with Pomersbach to take Queensland past WA’s total, before Agar had the former trapped lbw shortly before stumps were called.
WA 254 (M. Marsh 96, Whiteman 61; Feldman 4-58, Cutting 2-50) v Queensland 3-255 (Pomersbach 137no, Khawaja 64; Hogan 1-56, Agar 1-58)
