Stiaan Van Zyl made the perfect start to an important season for his Proteas hopes, as his unbeaten 167 consolidated the Cape Cobras’ dominant position on day two of their Sunfoil Series match against the Dolphins.
Van Zyl was the second highest runs-scorer when the Cobras clinched the 2012-13 Sunfoil Series title, and on Friday he served up another reminder of his credentials by adding 104 to his overnight total of 63.
That helped the Cobras to a total of 398 and a first-innings lead of 310 before Divan van Wyk’s unbeaten half-century helped the Dolphins close on 125 for one in their second innings.
The Cobras began the second day on 128 for three, but lost Yaseen Vallie and Dane Vilas in the space of two overs to fall to 140 for five.
However, Justin Kemp weighed in with a handy 42, and then Rory Kleinveldt unleashed a withering attack on the Dolphins bowlers, hitting four sixes and nine fours in an innings of 72 from just 64 balls.
Van Zyl and Kleinveldt added 111 in just 20 overs for the seventh wicket, ensuring that the Cobras secured a hefty first-innings advantage.
The Dolphins responded in steady fashion, with Imraan Khan sharing an opening stand of 46 with Van Wyk, and Khaya Zondo joining the latter after Khan had been trapped lbw by Dane Piedt.
Van Wyk finished the day unbeaten on 52, while Zondo was 35 not out as the Dolphins still trailed by 185 runs.
