Colin Ingram’s 79 gave the Warriors a first-innings lead over the Knights on day three of their Sunfoil Series match, but the Knights responded strongly in their second innings to keep themselves afloat in a gritty encounter at Buffalo Park.
Ingram required 207 deliveries for his knock and was backed up by Simon Harmer and Andrew Birch as the Warriors ground out a 74-run lead in reaching 398 all out in the second hour of the afternoon session.
That put the pressure on the Knights top order but, while Harmer was able to grab the key wicket of Dean Elgar for 25, Reeza Hendricks and Rilee Rossouw guided the visitors to stumps on 105 for one.
The Warriors began the day on 228 for five with Ingram and Harmer at the crease, and the pair added a further 74 runs before the latter was trapped lbw by Dillon du Preez for 42.
With Birch scoring 43 from just 35 balls in a 50-run stand for the seventh wicket with Ingram, the Warriors had a handy lead which Ingram added to once Birch had fallen to Johan van der Wath.
Werner Coetsee added to the three wickets he picked up on Friday when he dismissed Rusty Theron lbw, and finished with figures of 4 for 123 from 43 overs.
Harmer then had Elgar caught behind in the 22nd over of the Knights’ second innings, but Hendricks went to the close on 43 not out, while Rossouw was unbeaten on 32 with the Knights leading by 31 runs with nine wickets in hand.
