David Miller gave the Dolphins the perfect parting gift as he pulled off a stunning heist against the Warriors in a Momentum One-Day clash at Axxess St George’s on Wednesday night.
Miller will fly off to the UAE on Thursday to join up with the Proteas ahead of the limited overs matches against Pakistan, but signed off with an unbeaten 96 that saw the Dolphins to a three-wicket win on the Duckworth-Lewis method.
After the Warriors had scored 251 for eight, a brief rain delay reduced the Dolphins’ target to 244 from 45 overs, which they achieved with five balls to spare.
The result means that the Dolphins are the only unbeaten side left in the competition, but that didn’t look likely after they lost Vaughn van Jaarsveld (61) with 94 required from 68 deliveries.
However, when the crunch time arrived and 28 were needed from the last two overs, Miller showed his exceptional skills as he hit two sixes in the penultimate over, downgrading Andrew Birch (4 for 59) from hero to zero in the space of six balls that cost 24 runs.
Miller’s contribution was matched in size but not pace by Colin Ingram, who continued his sensational start to the tournament with an unbeaten 96 of his own.
Having scored half-centuries in the Warriors’ first two games, Ingram weighed in heavily once again but needed 123 deliveries to Miller’s 85 – a discrepancy which played a role in the final result.
Almost as important was Craig Alexander’s contribution, with the seamer registering career-best figures of 5 for 52 after he trapped Simon Harmer lbw with the final ball of his spell.
