Clash of the early season heavyweights in Momentum One-Day Cup

Ii’s still early days in the Momentum One-Day Cup but, with the Chevrolet Warriors and Cape Cobras issuing strong statements by winning two games out of two away from home, Friday’s clash at Buffalo Park between the two in-form sides has developed added weight.

While the Warriors have the competition’s standout performer in Wayne Parnell, who has already grabbed a six-wicket bag and a century, their opponents have shown adaptability in different conditions.

Parnell struck a superb 129 against the Knights on Wednesday afternoon after opening the batting in place of the injured Vuyisa Makhaphela, and Warriors coach Piet Botha confirmed that the all-rounder will continue to fill the role in the short term.

“He scored a century for us in Potch two seasons ago when we had an injury to one of our opening batsmen, so when Vuyisa injured his shoulder and couldn’t play on Wednesday, Wayne stepped in and proved once again what he is capable of.”

With Parnell’s availability for the Warriors limited by his forthcoming engagements with the Proteas, Botha is keen for the Warriors to get as many points on the board as possible while he has the 24-year-old at his disposal.

The Cobras are fortunate in that they will be relatively unaffected by national call-ups, and coach Paul Adams was pleased to see the depth of his squad when he made three changes for Wednesday’s clash against the Knights.

Although Lizaad Williams took some tap after coming in for Beuran Hendricks, who had a side strain, all-rounder Shaheen Khan and left-arm spinner Siya Simetu both made impressive contributions on debut.

“We’ve got a squad at the moment that’s very versatile,” said Adams. “I’m quite happy that everyone has got a run and the way the debutants performed on Wednesday was great.”
