Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement hype up there with Don Bradman

Sachin Tendulkar’s impending retirement is the big cricket news of the moment. The various media are feverishly writing, editing video, recording TV and audio to mark the Little Master’s exit from the game. The greatest Test player since Sir Don Bradman is certainly beating his predecessor in the hype stakes.

“It is very hard to measure the difference across a gap of over sixty years, but no doubt it is the biggest news in cricket for some time,” said Rina Hore, the executive director at the Bradman Foundation and Museum in New South Wales, Australia.

“As for there being more hype in the media,” she continued, “Sachin is without doubt the greatest Test cricketer since Sir Donald Bradman. He has played over 400 one-day games in addition to Test matches. He’s constantly traveled the world, played on a multitude of grounds with varying conditions in many more countries than Sir Donald.

It’s very true that times are changed. Tendulkar’s every move is scrutinised, whereas Bradman existed in an age before 24/7 sports TV channels, where the world was a simpler place.

Bradman announced his retirement plans six months ahead of his last Test match, compared to Tendulkar who is set to wave goodbye some 43 days from now. In the next month-and-a-bit there will not be a day where a sports fan doesn’t hear or see Sachin’s name somewhere.

“History will show that Sachin’s entire career has set an amazing high level of achievement,” Hore added. “It will be the standard by which contemporary players will be measured and compared for decades to come”.

“The Bradman Museum congratulates Sachin on his outstanding career and also the manner in which he has consistently shown such a deep respect for the game”, she concluded.
