Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and diplomat, Shaharyar Khan, in his latest book (Cricket Cauldron: The Turbulent Politics of Sport in Pakistan) has claimed that their former coach, Bob Woolmer, was unfit.

“I knew him, also, to be unfit. He had a little paunch and used an oxygen mask before he went to sleep”, he has written in his book.

When contacted, his son, Dale Woolmer denied the claim: “He was not ‘unfit’ as quoted, and swam daily when time permitted.”

“My father had what is known as Sleep apnea,” he added. “At night or when asleep he used a ventilator to aid restful sleep. There is no denying that our father enjoyed the food”.

Sleep apnea is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep.

Shaharyar Khan has rubbished the foul-play theory surrounding Woolmer’s death in 2007.

However, in an interview with Fox News, former South African cricketer Clive Rice had claimed that Woolmer was murdered by organised crime groups, saying “These mafia betting syndicates do not stop at anything and they do not care who gets in their way”.
