After more than twelve long years, the equations seem to have changed for Mohammad Azharuddin, who was banned by a three-member disciplinary committee comprising of Dr. A. C. Muthiah (chairman), K. M. Ram Prasad and Kamal Morarka.

At least, two of the above two members now agree that Azharuddin should accept the coaching role, if offered in Indian cricket.

The Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) is reported to be keen to hire Azhar’s services for its Ranji Trophy team.

“The ban was imposed in 2000 and since then many things have changed in Indian cricket. I see no reason why Azharuddin should not be allowed to take up this assignment ?”, K. M. Ram Prasad, the member of the disciplinary committee in 2000, said from Bangalore.

“If Azharuddin, the Member of Parliament (MP) can find time and wants to devote it for Indian cricket, I see no reason why we should opposite it”, he added.

The former Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) President K M Ram Prasad also served as manager of the Indian cricket team for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002.

Dr. Muthiah and Ram Prasad’s suggestion of life-ban on Azharuddin was not welcome by the third member (Kamal Morarka) of the disciplinary committee.

“Why not Azhar be offered the coaching role ? He has played 99 Tests for India and has won many trophies for the country. I was opposing the life-ban then and still favours him for the coaching role”, said Kamal Morarka.

Dr. A. C. Muthiah, who was the BCCI president then, didn’t wish to comment on his possible coaching role, but said, “I wish him good luck if he gets the job. I don’t want to comment on whether he should be given a chance to coach the boys”.

“There was no evidence found against Azhar by the CBI, but still he was banned”, Jaywant Lele, who was BCCI secretary then, said from Vadodra.
