BADGER BLOG: What it’s like representing Wanderers in Barbados

In the latest of his Bajun Blogs from the beautiful island of Barbados, Jason Greene talks about what it is like to represent the oldest cricket club in Barbados…

To represent the oldest club in Barbados is a privilege, but I’ll be totally honest, I’m not much of a historian nor was I present in 1877, the year the club was founded.

Jason Greene

Jason Greene

I joined the club in 2006 aged 18 and with the expectation of being selected for the national U-19 side, as I was in the trials set up. Unfortunately, that did not transpire so I used the opportunity to enjoy my first season at Wanderers and perform to the best of my ability.

It was indeed a great experience being a part of the team and sharing a dressing room with guys like Ian Bradshaw & Pedro Collins, who at the time were both very much involved with the West Indies team. Ian is our skipper when our elected captain Jason Holder isn’t available these days.

Some may query why I decided to play cricket at Dayrells Road given that I live east of the island with a few other clubs nearby.

Well, after being introduced to the club’s junior program by one of my close mates while at Garrison Secondary School), known as a “rock stone” throw away from the grounds, I was pretty much involved in Wanderers at the age of 14-15, hence my bond.

I am still learning my trade as a top order batsman at Wanderers. My career could be a lot better but has shown much improvement over the years only registering two hundreds for the club at the top level with quite a lot of fifties. Had I this maturity in past times towards building an innings, I would have definitely been a player with more 100’s behind my stats.

Kirk Edwards

In 2013, after being demoted from the top division in 2010, we are in good standing in this current season in 3rd position two points behind the current leaders so it’s all to play for as we aim to get back to the top flight.

Not to mention having players like Kirk Edwards, Kraigg Brathwaite, Jason Holder who represent the Windies who bring that extra edge to our team once they’re available to play. I’ll have to say, to play for Wanderers is a great thing and should be for any youngster aspiring to be a cricketer looking to excel in his/her career, and now we have the technology of video analysis and live streaming for our games, one couldn’t ask for a better way to get a career blooming.

So….it’s a blessing to represent the old club down at Dayrells Road.

Jason Greene is a cricketer for Wanderers Cricket Club, he has represented the Barbados Select XI and blogs about the game and has a has a strong love for coffee. He says, “Cricket is my passion!”
