Mumbai Indians, the IPL holders, will open their Champions League campaign with a tough trip to Rajasthan Royals, who finished third in IPL, when the group stages get underway on Saturday, September 21.
The winners of Australia’s and West Indies’ domestic t20 competitions, Brisbane Heat and Trinidad and Tobago, also face each other in their opening game, while the battle of the beaten finalists – the runners-up in the IPL and South Africa’s domestic t20 competition – also face each other with Chennai Super Kings taking on the Titans.
This year’s Champions League will follow a similar format to the previous competitions with the group stages being preceded by a qualifying competition, which will involve Otago Volts (the winners of New Zealand’s HRV Cup), Sunrisers Hyderabad (the fourth-ranked team in the IPL), the winner of Sri Lanka’s domestic t20 competition and Faisalabad Wolves (Pakistan’s domestic t20 champions).
There will be 29 matches in the tournament with prize money of US$6million on offer.
The qualifying stage will be held from September 17-20 at Hyderabad with the final taking place on October 6 in Delhi.
